It was slow and relied on human intuition.
Google is now using artificial intelligence to speed this up. They have trained their AI on the entire history of Chrome’s code. Because the AI has memorized years of historical data, it can essentially conduct a highly efficient search through the code, flagging areas where a developer might have made an error that mirrors a past mistake. It can even scan old, forgotten parts of the browser that humans are no longer actively monitoring.
This flood of patches is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it means software is becoming safer, as companies find and patch vulnerabilities at a speed that was once impossible. On the other hand, it shows that we have entered an era where AI is being used by both attackers and defenders to scour the internet for weaknesses.
We are essentially witnessing an arms race. When AI makes it easier to find bugs, everything becomes a target, forcing companies to move faster just to stay in the same place. While this should make our digital tools more secure in the long run, it also means that your devices will likely continue to demand constant updates as this automated game of cat-and-mouse plays out.
