The Quest for the Next Smartphone
Modern AI hardware relies on two main components: sensors and agents. The sensors—cameras and microphones—constantly monitor your environment to gather context, while the agents act as the brain. These agents are designed to perform actions on your behalf, like organizing your photos or answering questions based on your daily routine. But history shows that technology adoption is driven by social utility, not just innovation. We adopted smartphones because they were more useful than the devices that came before them. These new AI devices are struggling to prove they can do anything better than the phone already in our pocket. As these companies burn through cash and fight legal battles over proprietary designs and data, they are ignoring a growing wall of public exhaustion. Consumers are increasingly wary of being constantly monitored by devices, and they are skeptical of any product that feels like it was built on a foundation of stolen work. Until these companies can offer something that truly solves a daily problem without feeling like an invasion, they face a long, expensive road toward relevance.
