Most of us think of the internet as a cloud, but it actually lives in massive, windowless warehouses filled with thousands of computers running 24/7. These buildings, known as data centers, are the engines behind modern AI, and they require a massive amount of electricity to function. As companies like Amazon build more of these facilities to power their AI tools, the demand for power has reached a breaking point, forcing tech giants to make some controversial energy choices.
Amazon is moving forward with a major data center in Pecos County, Texas. To ensure it has enough electricity to run, the company is backing the construction of a new, private power plant that will burn natural gas. This plant is designed to provide massive amounts of power directly to the facility, rather than pulling electricity from the existing public grid. According to recent reports, the plant has been granted a permit to emit up to 33 million tons of carbon dioxide per year. If it operates at that level, it would become the single largest producer of carbon emissions from a power plant in the United States, surpassing even the country's largest coal-burning facilities.
The hidden cost of training AI
To understand why this is happening, you have to look at how AI actually works. These systems are created through a process called training, where a computer program reviews billions of pieces of data to learn patterns and generate responses. This is an extremely heavy lift for computer processors, which generate massive amounts of heat and require constant cooling. As we ask AI to do more complex tasks, the intensity of this processing increases, requiring more energy than the traditional internet ever did. When a company builds a data center, it needs a constant, reliable stream of electricity that never dips. While many companies aspire to use wind or solar power, those sources can be intermittent. By building their own natural gas power plants, these companies can guarantee they have the specific, non-stop power required to keep their AI models humming without competing with local families or businesses for grid capacity.
This situation highlights a growing tension between the rapid expansion of AI and the climate goals set by tech companies. Amazon, for instance, previously pledged to eliminate its carbon emissions by 2040. However, the company recently reported that its total carbon emissions actually increased by 16 percent last year, partly due to the power demands of its digital infrastructure. When a company chooses to build a gas-fired plant to power its growth, it is effectively choosing immediate, reliable energy over its long-term environmental promises. As more companies prioritize building dedicated power sources to support their AI ambitions, we may see a trend where our digital convenience comes at the direct expense of atmospheric health. It raises a difficult question: are we willing to trade the environmental progress we have made for the ability to power the next generation of AI tools?
