For a long time, the dominant narrative about AI was that it would eventually replace the mundane while leaving the creative, high-stakes work untouched. But as the reach of these models expands into the specialized back offices of banks and the quiet, pen-and-paper studies of pure mathematicians, it’s becoming clear that the boundary of what counts as 'human work' is shifting deep into the territory of experts.

Today, large organizations and research institutions are moving beyond using AI as an off-the-shelf tool. They are treating it as a scientific discipline, integrating AI into infrastructure to solve problems that require high accuracy and real-time reasoning. Meanwhile, in mathematics, AI is transitioning from a basic calculator to an engine capable of producing publishable research, pushing the discipline to redefine what it means to be a practitioner when the traditional grunt work of solving equations can be outsourced.

Rethinking the expert's role

Think of the modern AI-integrated expert not as a lone genius, but as an architect of systems. In finance, this looks like 'destination-back thinking': first, envisioning the specific outcome—such as personalized, real-time financial guidance—and then working backward to identify exactly what scientific breakthroughs are required to bridge the gap. In mathematics, this takes the form of 'formalization'—using proof assistants to translate informal human ideas into verified code, which allows computers to rigorously check every step of a complex logical chain.

The core shift here is that the value of the human professional is becoming less about the raw output—the proof itself or the completed transaction—and more about the ability to steer the machine. If a bank uses an agentic AI system to navigate billions of transactions securely, or a mathematician uses an AI to help formalize a 24-dimensional sphere-packing proof, the human is no longer just doing the work. They are defining the constraints, verifying the logic, and ensuring the result actually serves a human purpose.

This doesn't mean the era of human expertise is closing. If anything, it suggests that the most critical skill for the future is the ability to navigate the tension between machine efficiency and human understanding. Whether you are a finance professional or a mathematician, the challenge is to use these tools without ceding your own capacity for deep, deliberate thought. The goal is not to let the AI do the thinking for you, but to use it to reach problems that were previously too complex to solve—and then, crucially, to remain the one who understands why the solution works.
