Can smart glasses be useful without a camera?

Solos is releasing a new version of its audio-only smart glasses that are much lighter than previous models. These glasses use voice-activated AI to help with translations, calendar reminders, and questions. By skipping the camera entirely, they aim to offer the convenience of a digital assistant without the privacy concerns that come with cameras on your face. They are also introducing clip-on privacy accessories for their existing camera-equipped models to give users more control over when they are recording.

WHAT'S HAPPENING

The company Solos has announced a new pair of smart glasses called the AirGo A6. Unlike many competitors that feature built-in cameras, these glasses are designed solely for listening and speaking. They are notably lightweight at 19 grams, which is about half the weight of many camera-equipped alternatives. They connect to an artificial intelligence assistant, allowing you to ask questions, hear calendar alerts, or get real-time translations through small speakers that sit just by your ears. You can still hear the world around you while wearing them, making them feel more like an extension of your own senses than a pair of headphones. Solos is also releasing a privacy kit for their older, camera-equipped models, which includes a clip-on shield that physically covers the lens so you can be sure you are not recording.

HOW IT WORKS

Smart glasses are essentially tiny computers that use sensors and software to help us interact with the world. In the case of camera-free models like the A6, the core engine is a small processor, a battery, and a microphone array housed in the frame's arms. When you ask a question, the device captures your voice as data tokens—the basic units of text that an AI model processes—and sends them to a cloud-based digital assistant. The AI processes your words, looks up information, and converts its answer back into audio that plays through the speakers near your ears. Because the device doesn't have to power a high-definition camera sensor or handle the heavy data of video processing, it can be much smaller, thinner, and lighter than glasses that record photos or video. Think of it like swapping a heavy, multi-purpose backpack for a simple, light shoulder bag; it does fewer things, but you are much more likely to wear it all day without getting tired.

WHY IT MATTERS

The industry is currently split between two visions of wearable AI. One vision sees smart glasses as a way to let AI see what you see, turning them into a kind of digital memory or observer. The other focuses on audio as a less intrusive, more private way to keep an AI assistant on hand. By stripping away the camera, Solos is betting that many users actually prefer help without the social friction or privacy anxiety that comes with wearing a recording device. As these tools become more frequent in our lives, this shift highlights a growing personal choice: do you want an AI that watches the world with you, or one that just whispers helpful information in your ear?
