Artificial intelligence is moving in two distinct directions. Instead of just waiting for a prompt, these programs are designed to tap into your computer’s apps to complete real-world work. At the same time, companies like Venice AI are seeing rapid growth by focusing entirely on privacy, proving there is a large market for users who want these capabilities without handing over their personal data.

Moving from talking to doing

HOW IT WORKS

Think of a standard AI "model"—the massive digital brain that powers services like ChatGPT—as a smart intern who only communicates via email. You send a message, and they send a thoughtful reply based on the vast amount of information they studied during their "training" phase. But that intern never leaves their desk. A doer, or "agentic" tool, is different; it is given permission to interact with your computer's interface. This means it can simulate clicks, read data from your open windows, and switch between your calendar and email, essentially acting as an apprentice who can operate your mouse and keyboard. The challenge for developers is teaching the AI how to navigate these apps without causing a mess, which requires training the system not just on text, but on how to interact with buttons and menus.

WHY IT MATTERS

We are currently deciding what kind of relationship we want with our technology. For a long time, the trade-off for useful AI tools was that you had to provide your data to feed the engine. The financial success of companies like Venice, which prioritize privacy, suggests that as AI becomes more capable—moving from just summarizing meetings to actually scheduling or executing them—people will become much more protective of their digital habits. As these assistants become more powerful, the most important feature will be how much you can trust them with your screen, your documents, and your digital life.
